Professor Andrew Boulton is President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for 2020-21. He also currently serves as President of the Worldwide Initiative for Diabetes Education and Chair of EURADIA (European Alliance for Diabetes Research).

Prof. Boulton is a graduate of Newcastle-upon-Tyne University. He subsequently trained in Sheffield and Miami prior to accepting an appointment at Manchester University, where he is currently Professor of Medicine with a special interest in diabetes and its complications. He is also Consultant Physician at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Among his other distinguished roles, Prof. Boulton has been President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, founding Chair of the Diabetic Foot Study Group and Chair of Postgraduate Education and Hon. Secretary/ programme chair for EASD.

Prof. Boulton has received many awards, most notably the ADA Harold Rifkin award for distinguished international service in diabetes, the EASD Camillo Gogli prize, the ADA Roger Pecoraro Lectureship, the Georgetown distinguished achievement award in diabetic limb salvage, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists' International Diabetes Endocrinologist of the Year Award. In 2017, he gave the Banting Memorial Lecture at the Annual Meeting of Diabetes UK.

Prof. Boulton has authored more than 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, mainly on diabetic lower limb and renal complications. He is a past editor of Diabetic Medicine and currently an associate editor of Diabetes Care.

Prof. Akhtar Hussain is President-Elect of the International Diabetes Federation (2020-2021). He previously served on the IDF Board as a Vice-President between 2013 and 2017.

Prof. Hussain originates from Bangladesh and immigrated to Norway in 1984. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and subsequently received post-graduate and doctoral diplomas in Boston (USA) and Bergen and Oslo (Norway).

Prof. Hussain has been working actively in diabetes over the last 25 years. He is currently Professor at NORD University (Norway) focusing on diabetes and metabolic syndrome, and previously served as Professor of Global Health at the University of Oslo (2006-17). Other positions he performed include office head of the Clinical Cancer Research and Epidemiology, National University hospital (Norway) and Senior Advisor for Research, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo.

Prof. Hussain has been involved with a multitude of diabetes research programmes and organisations in numerous countries around the world. He initiated the Primary Diabetes Prevention Programme in Bangladesh and Pakistan and other programmes related to type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Prof. Hussain is a life member of the Diabetes Association of Bangladesh and a member of the Norwegian Diabetes Association, where he served as an executive member of its Medical Advisory Board for six years.

Prof. Hussain has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles published in international journals.

Dr. John Mangwiro is Chair of the International Diabetes Federation Africa Region (2020-21).

Dr. Mangwiro obtained his medical qualifications in Zimbabwe and Ethiopia. He is a consultant specialist physician and diabetes specialist and former president of the Zimbabwe Diabetic Association (ZDA).

He is also responsible for the Changing Diabetes in Children Programme – an initiative to improve the care of around 3500 Ethiopian children & adolescents with diabetes by providing free insulin, test strips, education to patients, family and health care professionals.

In 2018, Dr. Mangwiro was elected to the National Assembly of the Zimbabwe Parliament and he is currently the Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care.

Dr Niti Pall is President of the IDF Europe Region (2020-21).

Dr. Pall is a senior clinician who combines clinical practice with an entrepreneurial edge to design. She has helped deliver new models of health care in the UK and India using an open, inclusive and creative style, and is highly skilled at building sustainable networks for improving patient care across traditional boundaries, particularly with secondary care, the voluntary sector and businesses. She is currently Medical Director for Global Health Practice at KPMG, leading their universal health coverage (UHC) work in Asia, as well as providing clinical leadership and primary care expertise across all work with KPMG’s Center for Universal Health Coverage.

At the national level, Dr. Pall has served as a member of the Board of Diabetes UK and as an advisor to the Strategic Health Authority for West Midlands, leading on all the planned care patient pathways. She was also an Associate Director at the Department of Health and advisor to NHS Global, UK. Her work has been recognised by the Royal College of General Practitioners for its outstanding contribution to the discipline of primary care, the first such award by the college.

Prof. Jamal Belkhadir is Chair of the IDF Middle-East and North Africa Region (2020-21).

Prof. Belkhadir is a specialist in endocrinology and metabolic diseases with a particular focus on diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes management during Ramadan. He is a former Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Rabat and Head of the Ibn Sina University Hospital in the city.

At the national level, Prof. Belkhadir is President of the Association Marocaine pour la Lutte contre le Diabète (Moroccan League for the Fight against Diabetes) and has chaired numerous working groups responsible for the development of national guidelines for diabetes care.

Regionally and internationally, he is an Honorary Member of the Francophone Diabetes Society, Vice-President of the African Francophone Society of Diabetology and Member of the Diabetes in Asia Study Group.

Dr Timotheus Dorh is Chair of the IDF North America and Caribbean Region (2020-21).

Dr. Dorh received his Medical Degree in Cuba from the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Pinar Del Rio and his post graduate from the University of Edinburgh in Family Medicine. He currently practices medicine in St Lucia and works as a Health Manager for an International American Volunteer Organization.

At the national level, Dr. Dohr has served volunteer roles within the St Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association, including Chair of Finance (2013-14) and President (2016-18). He was also Assistant Secretary of the St Lucia Medical and Dental Association (2012-13).

Dr. Douglas Villarroel is Chair of the IDF South and Central America Region (2020-21).

Dr. Villarroel trained in Boliva and Mexico and is specialised in endocrinology. He has occupied positions at several national and international academic institutions and is currently Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University (Chicago, USA). He is also Director of the Humberto Parra Medical Centre in Palacios, which provides free medical care for the populations of 15 rural communities.

His work in endocrinology has focused on diabetes, obesity, thyroid, osteoporosis and growth, and he has been the principal investigator in several multinational clinical trials.

In 1996, Dr. Villarroel played an instrumental role in the first liver transplant performed in Bolivia. He subsequently co-founded the Transplant Foundation and remains a member of its Board. Dr Villarroel himself received a kidney transplant when he was 27 years old. Dr. Villarroel has been actively involved in IDF activities for many years. He was Chair of the 'Living with Diabetes' stream at the IDF Congress 2011 in Dubai, UAE, and is currently Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes Voice, the online magazine of IDF.

Dr. Shashank Joshi is Chair of the IDF South-East Asia Region (2020-21).

Dr. Joshi graduated in medicine from Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, and subsequently acquired an MD in internal medicine and senior residency from the Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital.

His work in endocrinology has focused on diabetes, obesity, thyroid, osteoporosis and growth, and he has been the principal investigator in several multinational clinical trials.

At the national level, Dr. Joshi is President of the Indian Academy of Diabetes and the Association of Physicians of India. He was also a former President of the Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) and the All India Association of Advancing Research in Obesity.

Dr. Joshi is a Fellow of several medical societies, including the American College of Endocrinology, the American College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians. He has published 18 books and monograms and over 600 research publications, and has been Editor of various Indian medical journals, including the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine which he founded.

Prof. Moon-Kyu Lee is Chair of the IDF Western Pacific Region (2020-21).

Prof. Lee obtained his medical qualifications at Seoul National University and the University of California, San Diego. He is currently Professor, Department of Medicine at Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine and Director, Diabetes & Endocrine Center, Samsung Medical Center.

Prof. Lee was Chair of the Organising Committee for the IDF Congress 2019 in Busan, Korea. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications.
